2019 Award Winners
This year we offered an opportunity for everyone to nominate Jobs for Life leaders, volunteers, business partners, and graduates for an award as a way to recognize their hard work, support, and dedication in the community. The award winners, displayed below, will be recognized at the Labor Day for Dignity dinner. Come meet the winners and hear their stories!
"McCoy-Mangum" Award Winner: Charles Cheek (Location: Hampton Roads, Virginia)
This award honors the exemplary leadership that embodies beloved community, selfless desire to see others flourish, and efforts to continue the legacy of Jobs for Life’s mission of preparing individuals for meaningful work. Charles has been involved with Jobs for Life for several years, specifically leading as a City Network Catalyst in the Hampton Roads area, and truly lives out the spirit of the original founders of Jobs for Life, Pastor Donald McCoy and Chris Mangum. We are thankful for his ongoing work in the community!
"Ambassador" Award Winner: Scott Warren (Location: Springfield, Missouri)
This award honors a JfL leader who has significantly and positively impacted lives in the community, has shown exemplary leadership for the advancement of others on their JfL journey, and has accepted the challenge to restore dignity and change lives. Scott has done this and so much more since he became the JfL Site Leader at Schweitzer United Methodist Church in Springfield, MO in 2016. Scott actually received TWO award nominations from members of his community, and in their words, he has been "an essential part of helping more and more people move toward a blessed and productive future.
"Warrior" Award Winner: Maxene King (Location: Morgantown, West Virginia)
This award recognizes a Jobs for Life graduate who has shown exemplary courage in the face of adversity, overcame roadblocks, successfully completed the JfL class and continues to exemplify learned principles as a role model in the community. Not only has Maxene displayed incredible courage and determination since migrating to WV from her home in Jamaica and completing the JfL class hosted at Christian Help in Morgantown, she has also shown amazing leadership in her community. After graduation, Maxene found full-time employment and even started her own business. Thanks to her influence, several members of the community have both graduated from and served in Jobs for Life classes hosted at Christian Help. We're so proud of Maxene!
"Innkeeper" Award Winner: Mike Mills (Location: Ft. Myers, Florida)
This award recognizes a Jobs for Life leader and business partner who goes above and beyond in supporting JfL classes in the community, and provides JfL Graduates with meaningful employment opportunities and support. Mike has as been involved with Jobs for Life for the past three years, which have included four JfL classes in three different locations. In addition, through his role as Regional Representative for RAMS (a skilled construction services company that provides electrical contractors with additional skilled electrical workers) and their pre-apprenticeship program "Jump-start", Mike has helped several JfL graduates (including formerly incarcarated individuals) find new job and career opportunities.
